Visit from Grandma and Grandpa D
by Kerrie on Nov.01, 2006, under Kerrie
My mom and step dad came to visit last Wednesday and left Halloween morning. We had so much fun. We went to the Duke Gardens, which is beautiful. With all the changing leaves, NC is gorgeous right now. They came at a good time. We went shopping on Friday night. We all won orange t-shirts by making 3 baskets at a Sports store (you can see these awesome shirts in the slideshow below). On Saturday we went to a park where Allie loves the swing (“wee” as she calls it) and slide (“sly”).
That night we went to a BBQ restaurant in Durham that my mom heard about from Rachael Ray on the food network channel. All I can say is that we won’t trust Rachael’s opinion anymore. We were expecting something completely different. It was very much like a cafeteria; you get a tray and go down the line picking the food you want. This place was in the hood–every door and window had bars on them. We were definitely out of place. The food wasn’t bad, we especially enjoyed the carrot soufflé; but it certainly wasn’t worthy of a mention on the Food Network… It probably wasn’t all that bad, but because we saw it on TV, our expectations were way too high and it didn’t meet them at all. We were laughing all the way home.
Anyway, after dinner we went to the UNC Planetarium. It was supposed to be a Halloween special called “Scarolina Skies”. We were a little disappointed with this as well. They basically told some Greek Mythology stories while pointing out the stars. It wasn’t really a “show”, nor was it scary at all. So, even though our night didn’t meet our expectations, we sure had fun being together. We came home and played Sudoku. My mom is an addict now. On Sunday, we walked around UNC campus and on Monday we took them to a real BBQ restaurant. They left yesterday morning to travel to Alabama and Tennessee and will be back for one more night next week. We look forward to seeing them one more time.
Here are some pictures of their stay here. I didn’t take a ton of pictures with my camera. They’ve got a lot of good ones on their camera but I didn’t get a chance to upload their pictures to my computer.

Do you think you can get me an orange shirt? Those are wicked cool. Glad you guys had fun with mom and Dave. I didn’t realize mom got into Sudoku. Fun stuff!

We are home now and have great memories of our two week long trip to the Southeast. We loved being with you and especially getting to know Allie better. She calls us Pa and Pa. What a cutie! She had us smiling the whole time. Thank you for a wonderful and comfortable stay. Love you guys. Mom
