Music Time
by Kerrie on Sep.04, 2007, under Kerrie

Today we went to a trial Music Time for young children. Allie had fun with the musical instruments and enjoyed dancing and acting out animals. It was tempting to sign up for the class because Allie enjoyed it so much. The class is approximately $200 and is twice a week for 8 weeks.
During the class I thought, “I can do this at home.”
Afterwards, five us walked out together and talked about how fun it was. The money is what was holding us all back. We decided to have a play date once a week and do music time together…for FREE.
Five reasons I’m happy about this:
-That $200 stays in my pocket (or rather, in our savings account)
-I will make new friends
-Allie will make some new friends
-Allie gets to sing, dance and play instruments
-According to Baby Einstein’s website, my child will be a genius because of her exposure to music classes. I’ll let you know if she aces the IQ test in a few years.

What a great idea. Target used to have a set of instruments in their blue boxed brand for about 12 bucks and they came in a drum. I think they are the ones I have here. Also, there are probably instruments in teachers’ supply stores, etc. Sounds like fun. Remember the Janene Brady tapes? They have some fun songs about animals, seasons, holidays and marching. I can’t remember who I gave them to but kids loved that music.

Good for you! Savannah took a music class when she was about 3 and loved it! It could have easily been done at home but I’m not that motivated.

Give her the music. It’s in her little bones. Maybe someday she’ll front a band. That would make for awesome family reunions.

What kinds of music do you listen and dance to in this class? Classical or more kiddy music? It looks like a lot of fun for kids. What a good mom you are!

It’s a great way to get some of their energy out. It’s good to see you are making friends and having a great time in NC. Let us know how it goes for you.

Diego and I took a cheaper music class this summer – only 4 sessions, but I thought the same thing. It was just an organized playgroup session with music and manipulatives. They played with xylophones, drums, noisemakers, puppets, wooden dowels, etc. They did songs with movements touching different body parts, jumping, shaking, etc. They ran around in a circle and fell to the ground, or did freeze dance. I thought it was fun, but definitely doable at home. Also, it was mostly the same each week – seeing as kids learn through repetition. So all you really need to do is put together a program or two and do it over and over again. Another thing you could do is have each mom be in charge of their own little program to change it up. Yeah, so anyways, I’ve thought about it a lot ever since I took the class. I wish I lived by you so Diego could join your group!
