Minivan Mom

We said our goodbyes to our trusty old friend, Goldilocks (our gold Camry) and traded her in for a new friend, who is currently nameless. Here she is:

Feel free to suggest a name. She’s a 2002 Honda Odyssey and is decked with everything (leather, DVD player, VCR, CD, auto sliding doors, heated seats, etc.) Other than some minor dents, chips and normal wear, it’s in pretty good shape for a 6 year old minivan. I know what you’re probably thinking; “You don’t need a minivan with your small family and why they heck would you upgrade to a gas guzzling vehicle when gas prices are so high.” Well, our Camry was in desperate need of some major repairs. It has served us well but with over 160k on it, it was time to be traded in. We decided to go with a minivan since we will eventually need one. Plus we love the extra space. AND…now we have three extra seats so all you westerners can feel free to come visit us and we will chauffeur you around North Carolina.
Other than our big purchase, not too much is going on. As always, Jake is extremely busy; he’s working on three papers, not including his dissertation. The kids and I have had many play dates with friends this summer. It’s been scorching hot lately so we have been staying indoors. We got out early this morning and went to the playground where Allie played in the sand for a few hours. By 10am, I was ready to go home to our air conditioned apartment. Here are some pictures of the kiddos:

Hey we bought a minivan with 1 kid, and I haven’t regretted it since! Glad to see you got one with a dvd player though, smart choice! Welcome to the MAV world! Your kids are darling!

We are totally thinking we need an upgrade too, since I watch other little kids during the day, but I am just not ready to become a minivan mom! Maybe that is because I had to drive the family Dodge caravan, complete with blue interior and wood paneling, in high school-but with one as tricked our as yours it might not be so bad.

I have been coveting a new Chevy Tahoe since Andrea was born! I only have one kid, but I keep thinking, more space would be great. Especially on trips! We went to Yellowstone and had to fill our relatives cars with baby junk just to get up there! I am so envious of your new found room on the road! You could name it PULANGI (pronounced PULL-ON-GEE). It means white in Tongan!

I think it would be nice to have a car that you could put your kids in without bumping their heads all the time. You could call it Whitey, or Shmopsy, or Blanca, or Numchucks.

Yay, you found one. I think you will love it. You are higher up and can see better and also bigger so maybe you feel safer in it. Its so nice to have extra room for all the baby paraphernalia too. You can call it “Oddy” (short for Odyssey if you didn’t figure it out.)
Anyway, thanks for the kids’ photos. I love them. Luke is getting chunky and such an adorable toothless smile! Hope all is going well. Love ya.

OOh- that van sounds nice! My friend had the same one (minus the leather etc) and loves it. It drives like a car and is pretty good on gas mileage. I think it’s smart to get one with two kids– you’ll find you use the space quite a bit. Luke is adorable- I wish I could see him in person.

Wow, the minivan was surprising news to me. At least we can still road trip together in the same car!

Nice grab. You will enjoy having all the goodies upfront. You make me laugh though, 2002 being only 6 years ago doth not make it an old van at all. Any car from 1999 and up is expected to hit 200,000 miles before being old. We rolled 100,000 miles on our way to Boise this week. At 32mpg highway it’s the best fuel sipper we have. “Libero Blonco” I second the motion.

Yay! You joined the Mini-van club! Too bad we can’t cruise main together with our kiddos. I think you should call it “Cracker” since it’s white and also since it will be cracker infested eventually. Well, at least ours is crusted with an assortment of fishy crackers, pb crackers, soda crackers etc.
Hope you have a good vacation, btw!
